THE ROLE OF CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY IN THE MENTAL HEALTH OF TODAY'S ADOLESCENTS (Part 2)
In mental health disorders, religion plays
a role in overcoming the psychological problems of each individual. Society
views that someone who has no religion is more susceptible to mental disorders
than someone who has faith/religion. Because religion has a good view in
society and can nurture the soul of every individual. Therefore, every teenager
must have faith and worship for the peace of the soul. In the Christian
theological approach that every human life has been designed and willed by God.
Christ works with humans in an effort to heal mental health problems, such as
anger, anxiety, disappointment, irritability, stress, frustration, despair,
sadness and so on.[4] Therefore, humans must be serious in the healing process
through Jesus Christ. The holy spirit is able to help in every process that is
being carried out in the healing process. When someone chooses to do healing by
way of pastoral counseling, it means that someone has a longing to be close to
God. Every process carried out by a person will be guided and redirected to
good character and behavior according to God's will. Having a good relationship
with God can mature the faith of every teenager. When our relationship with God
is good, then we are able to control every behavior and emotion in our life.
Having great faith in Christ Jesus is the basis of all aspects in the life of
every people.
To deal with mental health problems, in Christianity it is known as pastoral counseling. In pastoral counseling there is a trilogical concept (counselor, counselee, and the presence of God in the form of the Holy Spirit). [5] In pastoral counseling, it is not only discussing feelings, but also being able to live out their feelings. The function of pastoral counseling is to be able to bring someone in the approach stage and to be able to interpret the truth of Christ through God's Word. But sometimes mental disorders push teenagers further away from God. The existence of traumatic experiences in adolescents makes them feel like failures and worthless. Therefore, we really need this pastoral counseling to reshape ourselves which have been damaged by the trauma within us. As it is written in the letter Philippians 4:6-7, ''do not be anxious about anything, but in all things state your wishes to God in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving. The peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ.'' This verse states that every human being must be able to avoid all the anxiety and worry that disturbs the life of every human being. What weighs on our minds, we must channel it all through prayer accompanied by thanksgiving to God. God is able to let go of all our worries and anxieties and be replaced with abundant peace.
